Richard Kelley
Born in Waikīkī in 1933, the eldest child of Hawai‘i’s pioneering hoteliers Roy and Estelle Kelley, Dr. Richard Kelley worked at his parents’ first hotel. Following his first career as a pathologist at Queen’s Hospital and professor at the University of Hawai‘i School of Medicine, Dr. Kelley picked up the reins and transitioned Outrigger Hotels and Resorts from a mom-and-pop management style to a modernized company. He steered the company to become Hawai‘i’s largest, and the fastest-growing hospitality chain in the Pacific, operating more than 12,000 hotel rooms and condominium units in over 50 properties from Maui to Mooloolaba, Australia. The Kelley family sold Outrigger Hotels in 2016, leaving an enduring imprint on travel and tourism in Hawai‘i. A past-chair of the Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau, Dr. Kelley is an emeritus member of the World Travel & Tourism Council. He is or has been affiliated with the boards of the University of Hawai‘i’s School of Travel Industry Management and the Education Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association Presidents Academy. He also served as a trustee at the University of Denver, and as chairman of the board of trustees at Punahou School. Now retired in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Kelley and his wife, Linda, head a family of seven children, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
