Karl Kim

Karl Kim is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at UH Manoa, and Director of the graduate program in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance. He studies transportation, cities, and resilience. Educated at Brown University and M.I.T., he has been a Fulbright scholar to Korea and the Russian Far East.  He is currently Executive Director of the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (ndptc.hawaii.edu), authorized by the U.S. Congress to develop and deliver FEMA certified training courses for underserved, at-risk communities on natural hazards, mitigation, and urban planning. The Center has trained more than 50,000 first responders, emergency managers, and leaders in over 350 communities across the world. He has also developed and led research and training programs in Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia.
